For voice, I will typically start with technique and breath. The first lesson is heavy in feeling the anatomy of the body to cultivate a coordinated breath for the most optimal and healthy singing. From there, we move into warm-ups, and will adjust vowels to find resonant spaces. For beginner students who are pursing music on the tonal instruments, I typically start with learning the names of the notes on the instrument and the major scale in every key as it relates to the piano. For the bass guitar I start of with basic finger strength techniques and exercises while incorporating the major scale fingering form and Nashville numbering system for all tonal instruments. Yes, I recognize this sounds a bit "out there" but my point is we need to focus less on good v. bad. Why not celebrate the gift of every sound we make? The work we create must have a purpose. I believe that students should be given a platform and support to create something beyond the traditional recital.
