I currently use Piano Adventures Lesson and Theory books for beginner students. I have also used the Alfred series and really like the Finger Power series, too. Fundamentals of music theory is extremely important for new students of any age. I ask students to use the Music Tutor App to help them learn note names for the treble and bass clefs, and they learn by playing a fun game. We sometimes have competitions with siblings to see who can get the highest score! Read More

Shortly after my graduation and subsequent marriage, I began a teaching career that has included private piano lessons, small classroom groups, combined piano/voice lessons at a private music school, and being a homeschool educator to my own three children! I am a skilled accompanist, which requires remembering that your job is to uplift and support the group or individual performer as they sing or play. I have accompanied many church choirs, school choirs, vocal and instrumental recitals, and ensemble groups. Read More

I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. I have studied with some great teachers and feel like I need to pass on those methods to the next generation of musicians. Read More

This is where I think it is fun to be creative because we are all different. Everybody has a different method of interpretation and I feel like that is my job to figure out what works for you as an individual. For example I will simply ask you questions like what style of music are you listening to and songs you want to learn how to play. It is also my job to know the difficulty level and how to guide you in the right direction to keep things fun! Read More

I've been in the field of music education, production and performance for over 20 years. I have spent half of my life helping others find their path in music. One of the most important lessons I have learned as a teacher is that...."people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!!!!" I understands that building a relationship with a student is just as important as the information I teach. Read More

I create custom lesson plans for each student, for unlike the trombone or the cello, everyone's voice is considerably different. I will first hear the students goals, and where they want to go, or what they want to do. Then, I will assess where they are at, and then customize lesson plans to take them from where they are to where they want to go. I will do this by giving them different songs to learn. Read More

I love to watch singers reach their full potential by helping them find their true singing voice and perform with confidence and freedom!  I began performing at age three and have sung and played different styles and genres for different audiences ever since.  My foundational training is in classical voice, earning my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Mississippi in 1991.  I was then awarded an Apprenticeship with the Knoxville Opera and a Graduate Teaching Assistantship at the University of Tennessee, where I earned my Masters of Music in Vocal Performance in 1993.
