I typically begin my young students in the Suzuki Method for Flute, inwhich I have received the training for this method. For older students, I begin them in the Trvor Wye Method for Beginning Flute Students. I supplement both these methods with solos appropriate for their level and goals, such as UIL and other competitions. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. My method of teaching puts emphasis on the keyboard fundamentals that develop sound piano technique. I use a systematic approach in which the student progresses from their present level, whatever it may be, beginner, intermediate, or advanced, to their next level in a reasonable time. For the beginners, hold a correct gesture, good handposition, or firm embouchure, and air support are some of the main requirements. For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. I will sit with you, one on one, and introduce you to your guitar. We will string the gutar, tune the guitar, and learn the parts of the guitar together. Next, we will begin memorizing the fretboard and where all of the notes are located along every string.
