Throughout my years of teaching, I've obsereved, everyone learns differetly and at different paces. Knowing this, I try to set practical goals for my students each lesson. I encourage each of them to advance by teaching them certain songs they love, have them listen to more piano music, and take them to piano concerts. For first time students, I immediately begin focusing on the aspect of breath related to the voice. I achieve this by utilizing exercises such as Lip Trills, Tongue rolling, and belly laughs. The is a fun, interesting, and above all effective way to show the student what muscles are working and where. I prefer to start with vocal techniques such as efficient breathing, posture, diction, and overall vocal warm ups. This gives me a gage of what my students learning style is. Also, this gives me an idea of what the student needs to progress in a healthy singing! I typically start with a students favorite song within the genre theyre most interested in. I have been singing myself since I danced around the living room to my Dad playing the accordian and singing, and been studying voice and performance intensly since the age of 15. My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know. I myself have an appreciation for many different styles of music, so I do my best to help students understand stylistically what is appropriate, necessary, and customary about the repertoire they are performing.
