In the class, I learned about the inner workings of the voice, the musculature and how to properly teach voices of any age. For begining students who are under the age of thirteen, I prefer to start with Bastien's Piano Basics. This series comes with four different books (Technic, Piano, Performance, and Theory) that give the student a well rounded lesson. For students over the age of thirteen, I like to use Alfred's Basic Piano Course. This series has a more mature song selection, a variety of genres, includes music theory, and has piano excercises. My approach as a teacher is to see what the voice is already doing and improve on the foundation that we already have. All music-making is positive music-making. My students love that I laugh and chat with them during our lessons. I primarily teach Musical theater and characterization, but I can also teach classical music and diction (languages). I believe that style, voice phenomenons, language/diction, artistic innovation, decision-making, characterization, and active choice-making are the best ways to get someone to make great music. My teaching experience rests in observations and with my peers. I have taught multiple classes and sectionals on my own in my now 4 year college career both in ensembles and in my host schools. I have taught a lesson on Music Theory, going over some core concepts that can be found there, I have taught 3rd grade students songs in a general music classroom, I have led a lesson there as well, making sure that each student stays focused on the task before them, and I have lead sectionals for Concert and Chamber Choir here at Lebanon Valley College.
