My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. Read More

I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music! I graduated from Ole Miss in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism with minors in both Music and English and I graduated again in 2012 with a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language with a subfield in Music. I've played trombone since 1998 and have performed professionally since 2002 across the entire spectrum of genres and venues. Read More

Vocal technique, including breath support, pitch, range, tone, and style are important for every singer. However, each student is not the same, and it is important to help a student find their natural voice and work from there. A huge part of becoming a better singer has to do with building confidence. Confidence comes from having little successes and getting in touch with one's own natural sound. Then wonderful new sounds and feelings can be built from there. Read More

I began teaching guitar lessons informally in college. I learned then that I had a knack for helping people understand concepts and techniques on the guitar. I have had more regular students since my early twenties, from young children to senior citizens. I have taught singers who simply wanted to be able to strum chords; folk and blues fingerpickers; and the occasional lead guitarist in rock, pop or blues styles. Read More

For my students, I will always meet them where they are in their musical journey. For students in general, I find they respond better when faced with a challenge that they are more familiar with. I believe the same rules of musicianship in classical based performing can be learned from a more contemporary aspect. After the student is comfortable, I will slowly expand their horizons both in the music they listen to and the music they perform. Read More

In a first lesson, I evaluate the student's skill level and discuss what kinds of music we would like to study. After this initial evaluation, I develop a personalized plan which addresses healthy vocal production and practice techniques which address the needs of the student. I tailor my instruction to each student's needs, accounting for various vocal needs, temperaments, and learning styles; therefore, I do not have a generic method. Read More

Students don't learn if they don't feel motivated or enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way.
