I always start my lessons off with vocal exercises in order to assess the status of the voice and what we need to work on, and also what progress has been made since our last session, if any. In order to keep my students interested, I like to work on repertoire that theyre interested in and that they select. I definitely suggest pieces that I think might help practice areas of their vocal technique that they would like to improve, but I also want to make sure its music that they like and want to sing. I started teaching private singing lessons five-years-ago while still in college. Starting off, I was teaching classical and pop vocal technique to fellow college students. As time progressed I expanded, and began teaching children (ages five-to-twelve) songwriting, guitar, piano and performance. I taught part-time until a year ago when started my own private studio in Southern California. My teaching experience started at the School of Rock and I loved it ever since. I continued to improve on my teaching ability as an English Teacher in China. I lead some group lessons at "Group Expression" in Shanghai; working with non native English speakers. The skills learned as an English teacher have helped immensily with communicating with students on how to better approach their singing. In high school, I first started working with kids through Special Olympics, mission trips, and church. As an educator, I am soft-spoken, patient, and warm, creating an understanding environment. My expectations of my students, though high, are extremely clear. It is up to the educator to modify for every student.
