I cater the lessons towards the individual needs of the students. For beginning students 6 years old and under, I prefer to use Shirley Givens' books, "Adventures In Violinland", along with Suzuki materials through rote memorization. When the student is 5 or 6 years old or older, I like to use Suzuki materials but supplement with note reading right away. Also, I love it when a student brings a specific piece of music in that they would like to play, whether it is from the classical repertoire, or jazz, pop, etc. I routinely prepare more advanced students for youth orchestra auditions, and regional orchestra and solo competitions.
I have had a great deal of experience with all ages and want to share my love for music with others. As long as the student is enjoying playing an instrument, progressing, my goal has been reached.
I started to teach privately and give group lessons when I was in college. There I have received extensive training and varied teaching experience through including a required music pedagogy course, “Musician as Educator”, participating in the outreach program teaching grade 3 to 5 at the Children’s Storefront in East Harlem, NY, and assisting the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Orchestra for students from grade 3 to 12, where I was responsible for helping students develop individually, leading sectionals, and rehearsing the assigned music. I was invited to the North Carolina Governor’s School in Winton-Salem, NC as a teaching assistant in the summer of 2011 for similar responsibilities that I had with the MSM Pre-College Orchestra as well as giving private lessons and dormitory resident counselor duties. As an recent Master's of Music Degree graduate, I am teaching both privately, and at an after school K-8 group violin and viola program as a substitute teacher for the Harmony Program in Manhattan, and coaching the Stamford Young Artists’ Philharmonic for high school students in Stamford, CT. In April, 2013, I was invited to be an adjudicator for N.Y.S.S.M.A. to evaluate the elementary students’ violin and viola performances.
I am an all around music teacher who has vast experience in both teaching and performing. I graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 2003 and as a concert violinist, I have toured around the world performing both classical and jazz music. I have performed with ethnically diverse musicians which allowed me to understand the fundamental of music itself. I take teaching music very seriously because I believe understanding the role and concept of music is very important to students.
Excellent, nurturing Suzuki violin pedagogy - treating music as a mother tongue to absorb, imitate, and engage with - informs my methods for beginning and intermediate students. Gradually, as the student shows readiness, we blend in the traditional yet humane study of expert violin playing and thoughtful musicianship modeled for me in Dorothy DeLay's masterclass. As distinct from many string players, I am also a devoted and accomplished singer. So breathing, posture, phrasing, color, line, and articulation are key to my approaches to making and teaching music, and thus to helping my students "sing" through their playing.

The teachers in our network create a customized lesson plan for every student, so no two students' lesson plans will be identical. Topics covered during Musika's violin lessons may include, but are not limited to: how to hold the violin and bow, different bowing techniques, how to read music, musicianship skills to aid in playing in tune, developing a natural, tasteful vibrato for sustained notes, and most importantly, to have fun playing the violin!
Musika works with all ages and skill levels to help students reach their highest potential! Whether you are an adult beginner or an advanced player, our teachers will work with you to enhance your skills and musical comprehension. With customized lesson plans adult students find lessons with Musika to be both successful and rewarding.
Musika offers customized one-on-one music lessons at your home - a time saving solution for busy parents and students. The convenience of in-home lessons allows you to save time without having to transport your child to class, allows your child to maximize their busy schedule, and provides a safe and familiar environment in which to learn.
Most beginning students will start with a violin rental. This is a great option as it allows for flexibility in the size students grow. Students under the age of 18 frequently begin with a smaller size of instrument work their way up to adult sized instruments. When you are beginning the rental process, it is important to have the student present so they can be fit properly. Teachers in our network will also be able to guide you in your instrument selection.
Young students will learn all aspects of playing their new instrument. All children will begin to read music and learn how to handle their instrument properly. Violins are a small instrument that can be comfortable hands. While most adults will play on a standard full size, the violin comes in smaller sizes as well and our network of teachers will be able to assist you on choosing the correct one.

Melissa is very encouraging, positive, supportive and patient. She knows how to explain the technical details of flute and music notation to kids in a way that makes sense to them. She has been reliable so far turning up on time and calling if there is a need to reschedule. I would definitely recommend her to others.

Caitlyn is friendly, helpful and still holds my high-school aged daughter accountable for practicing. She also makes sure the music technique is mastered correctly during the lessons - they work hard and still have a good time together. I can highly recommend her as a flute teacher. My daughter is very happy & grateful to have found Caitlyn as a teacher.

My son is truly enjoying his lessons with Chris. He looks forward to them and is motivated to practice. Chris is conscientious and shows up on time and whenever he is supposed to. He communicates clearly if rescheduling is ever required and is accommodating when we need to change the day. I would recommend Chris to anyone.

“My son and I have been taking lessons with Lynn for 5 or 6 years now. She is very patient with younger students (& older students having "senior moments"). She is also flexible in her lessons in that if we want to work on theory, jazz, rock, blues, she will cater to our requests.” – Karl B., C.P.A., Aug 2015

Martina has been a great teacher. Our son is 8 and had taken some piano lessons before starting with Martina. She came right in and got him to improve. She does a great job of giving him just enough of a challenge to make him work and learn but not any pieces that are so overwhelming he can't get them. She has helped him through a lot of early music theory so that he not only can play the piano but understands the music he is reading in all of its complexity.

Michael is exactly what I was looking for in a teacher. The first thing he did was to determine what I wanted to get out of lessons, and what my existing skill level is. He is now aiming me in the right direction - and he is clearly skilled, experienced and knowledgeable, in addition to being very easy to get along with. I'm very happy.

She is amazing! My daughter, Isabella (7 yrs) is totally engaged in the lesson. Lilly's definitely has a gift with teaching young children!!! A great talent of hers is making the content interesting, current to today's music and most of all fun! She has a knack for taking the material and translating it in a way that is relatable to Isabella. My daughter really enjoys her lesson's and has moved along rather quickly with the material. Thanks Lilly!

I had always wanted to take vocal lessons, but was very nervous about it until I had the opportunity to have Ali as my instructor. She made me feel very comfortable and helped me realize my strengths while giving me other areas to work on and strengthen. I liked how Ali had me sing out of my "comfort" zone to realize my vocal range. It is obvious that Ali loves music and sharing that love with her students. She is very good at what she does and works well with both male and female voices. I highly recommend Ali and give her solid 5 stars

Karleen has really turned it around for me. My previous teacher (not from Musika) had me feeling anxious, upset, and incapable...NOT the desired result! Karleen's method is clear, appropriate for my beginning level, and (best of all) actually lets me achieve some progress! I'm actually looking forward to my lessons now!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
