Starting viola late in high school was a big decision for me. My parents had told me I was not allowed to start violin as a child because it would be "too hard". Once I started playing, I hit the ground running. I decided about a year into playing that I wanted to teach music. I went to Susquehanna University and majored in Music with a Music Technology minor. There, I participated in the string pedagogy program. This involved weekly teaching seminars and being paired with nearly 20 students throughout my time at Susquehanna. I participated in regular violin festivals by teaching group repertoire and theory classes. I also had the joy of being a counselor for the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra Summer String Festival. Another fond memory is conducting for a new pilot project called SU strings. I have played for the Susquehanna University Orchestra, The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, The Reading Pops orchestra, as well as countless quartets, a rock band for a nightclub gig, and as a solo artist for musicales, a recital, and on many, many other occasions. I absolutely adore teaching and teach students of all ages and backgrounds!
For beginning students, I generally start with Suzuki Method, Sassmannshaus, and my own methods which I have created over the years. I emphasize the importance of ear training, becuase that is what allows us to know if we are playing correctly. For intermediate and advanced students, we work very heavily on warm ups, scales, etudes, and repertoire. Repertoire is a personal thing, and many of my adult students already have an idea of what they would like to play. However, I do love the Suzuki Method's choices of repertoire and I will typically work from this methodology, unless we have discussed otherwise.
I began teaching lessons in college, but grew my studio while I was preparing for grad school auditions from 2010-2012. Most of my students at that time were beginner piano lessons and I love to teach young children. I also greatly enjoy teaching children with autism. I have had success in combining my music education and music therapy skills to help students accomplish musical goals while also addressing behavioral goals such as increasing verbal or nonverbal communication.
I strive to eventually surpass the theory and the muscle memory and teach the student how to connect. In reality, much of the sound a student produces is the result of their imagination, so I believe it is vital for them to keep motivated and find their own performance inspiring. A good teacher has the ability to “fire up” a student so they are motivated to improve and learn, and that is just what I do.
So what will you learn? First of all it depends on your level, of course. If you are just starting out – I will provide you or your child with a strong foundation which will give you the ability to progress much more quickly. The basics of music theory are taught as an integrated element of each lesson time. This will help you understand the entire learning process and will further accelerate your progress. If you are an advanced or even professional performer you will gain from me great support and invaluable tips and secrets of developing your skills and techniques, passed on to me from some of the best world-famous teachers. Legato/detacher, staccato, ricochet, apoyando, tirando, vibrato, fingering, positioning, arpeggios, double notes, chords, pizzicato, left hand pizzicato, flageolets or double flageolets, dynamics, basic and advanced music theory, arrangements, professional performing…anything -- just name it.

Our earliest recommended starting age for violin is 4, although exceptions can certainly be made for younger students who are capable of handling the strings properly and who have sufficient strength in the fingers and hands. A teacher can help you decide which size instrument to choose depending on the age and height of your child.
Most beginning students will start with a violin rental. This is a great option as it allows for flexibility in the size students grow. Students under the age of 18 frequently begin with a smaller size of instrument work their way up to adult sized instruments. When you are beginning the rental process, it is important to have the student present so they can be fit properly. Teachers in our network will also be able to guide you in your instrument selection.
All students are different. That means all lessons will be different. Each teacher tailors their lesson plans around a student's specific needs and goals, while teaching them the most important aspects of their instrument. Students will learn how to read music and develop their own unique style all while practicing proper technique. No two lessons will be the same as everyone's progression is timed differently. My daughter, Valarie is one of the original members of the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble under the guidance of Aaron. He patiently worked with Valarie as well as the other five members individually and as a group to produce music that has been shared and enjoyed locally as well as nationally. Giorgi has made learning cello even more fun. From the sympathetic, "It is hard" to the precise, "Be careful about the curve of the thumb" he has strengthened learning in every lesson, without being overwhelming. He started playing a little duet on only the 3rd lesson or so, which made me feel, even as a beginner, that I'm already starting to make (occasionally screachy) music. He has suggested a variety of drills and practice techniques which have also sped up the process a lot. And he has a good sense of humor and surprising amount of patience.

Gina is very supportive and encouraging. Even though I get frustrated with my progress, she can tell that I've been practicing and reminds me of how far I've come. Bill has been great with my 2 young children (age 3 & 6). He has integrated games into the lessons - they have enjoyed showing us how to play the games when it is time to practice piano. Caitlyn is friendly, helpful and still holds my high-school aged daughter accountable for practicing. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
