Starting viola late in high school was a big decision for me. My parents had told me I was not allowed to start violin as a child because it would be "too hard". Once I started playing, I hit the ground running. I decided about a year into playing that I wanted to teach music. I went to Susquehanna University and majored in Music with a Music Technology minor. There, I participated in the string pedagogy program. This involved weekly teaching seminars and being paired with nearly 20 students throughout my time at Susquehanna. I participated in regular violin festivals by teaching group repertoire and theory classes. I also had the joy of being a counselor for the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra Summer String Festival. Another fond memory is conducting for a new pilot project called SU strings. I have played for the Susquehanna University Orchestra, The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, The Reading Pops orchestra, as well as countless quartets, a rock band for a nightclub gig, and as a solo artist for musicales, a recital, and on many, many other occasions. I absolutely adore teaching and teach students of all ages and backgrounds!
My teaching methods include traditional and Suzuki technique with an emphasis on music theory. Young students benefit from Suzuki technique using activities and games to foster learning. For young beginners as well as adult, I start with Hal Leonard's Esential Elements. Lessons include classical as well as popular music and are tailored to the need of the individual student. By instilling a strong foundation in string technique and music reading, students progress quickly and have fun. An education in music is an important part of a complete education for all ages.
I began teaching lessons in college, but grew my studio while I was preparing for grad school auditions from 2010-2012. Most of my students at that time were beginner piano lessons and I love to teach young children. I also greatly enjoy teaching children with autism. I have had success in combining my music education and music therapy skills to help students accomplish musical goals while also addressing behavioral goals such as increasing verbal or nonverbal communication.
I’ve noticed the Suzuki Method books for Violin/ Viola are still a classic; and for good reason- so I enjoy using those for my lessons. They continue to motivate the student by having goal-oriented exercises and I reflect that in my lessons. I also like to put EXTREME emphasis on LISTENING during my lessons, in which the Progressive Duets Series (by Carl Fischer) and Beautiful Music for Two Violins (by Samuel-Applebaum) helps immensely with encouragement and confidence in their playing. For guitar, I use The Modern Method for Guitar Series (by William Leavitt of Berklee) combined with my own improvisational education methods.
Since entering music school at the age of five, I continued my training in various institutions of Kazakhstan, Germany, and Russia, culminating twenty years later with a Master’s Degree from the world-famous Saint Petersburg State Conservatory of Russia. For the last thirteen years I have been working as a private instructor of violin, viola, and guitar, conventionally as well as online, with students of all ages and all skill levels. To be honest – teaching music and music itself are not only my passions, but are my life. In engaging all types of learners, I individualize lessons by constantly modifying and accommodating materials. At all times I am committed to encouraging my students to strive for excellence not only musically, but in every area of life. My deep experience in teaching also shows that for the best results my students have to enjoy the entire process. That is why my lessons are always easy to understand, interesting and fun.I really cannot wait to meet you and would love to have an opportunity to assist in your growth and development in the musical arts.

The teachers in our network create a customized lesson plan for every student, so no two students' lesson plans will be identical. Topics covered during Musika's violin lessons may include, but are not limited to: how to hold the violin and bow, different bowing techniques, how to read music, musicianship skills to aid in playing in tune, developing a natural, tasteful vibrato for sustained notes, and most importantly, to have fun playing the violin!
As a student starts lessons they will need to provide their own instrument. While advanced students may choose to buy a violin, it is a good idea for beginners to look into rental programs. By renting, you are able to commit less financially, and you will be equipped with all the accessories you need. Renting also benefits children, as string instruments come in different sizes, and a child will most likely start on a small instrument. As the grow, they will need to increase the instruments size, and this switch can be done very conveniently if you are renting.
Young students will learn all aspects of playing their new instrument. All children will begin to read music and learn how to handle their instrument properly. Violins are a small instrument that can be comfortable hands. While most adults will play on a standard full size, the violin comes in smaller sizes as well and our network of teachers will be able to assist you on choosing the correct one.

Laura is a fabulous teacher. She explains concepts to me using concrete examples so that I can understand changes that I need to make to my posture, breathing, phrasing, etc. She makes warm-up exercises fun, and she's got a great sense of humor over all. Her teaching style is collaborative, more egalitarian (she respects what I already know and meets me at my level), tailored to my particular interests and strengths, and I always look forward to our lessons!

I really like her. And as an adult student, a good teacher who keeps the pace up but still keeps it reasonable in terms of difficulty is really hard to find. She does a great job of explaining little detail things in terms I (as a musically challenged human) can understand. I'm having a blast! 10/10 would recommend!

My daughter, Valarie is one of the original members of the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble under the guidance of Aaron. He patiently worked with Valarie as well as the other five members individually and as a group to produce music that has been shared and enjoyed locally as well as nationally. He has the ability to seek out the strengths of each student while building confidence. Through his teachings, not only had Valarie learned how to produce and enjoy music, but also responsibility and so many life skills for everyday living.

My son is truly enjoying his lessons with Chris. He looks forward to them and is motivated to practice. Chris is conscientious and shows up on time and whenever he is supposed to. Brett is an accomplished musician, who shared his knowledge at a level that my five year old understands. He is polite and relaxed in his mannerisms but take a serious approach to focusing on the lesson. He is very patient and engaging with the attention span you'd expect from a kindergartener. "Richard is a very talented and a patient teacher. He teaches my 6 year old daughter in the comfort of our home and he is very regular. He follows a learning book and mixes his lessons to bring difficulty and technicality while keeping it interesting for my daughter. My daughter was difficult to work with at the beginning but he was able motivate her in every possible way. As a parent I make an effort to learn with my daughter so that when my daughter practices I am able to guide and correct her and Richard is very generous to take the time to give provide me concepts. I started my 5 yr old daughter with Karleen this Fall. Karleen has a calm and honest disposition. My daughter adores her and cannot wait for her arrival. I was concerned because my daughter is not so willing to "practice" during the week. Karleen advised me to allow her habits of practicing to evolve naturally as her love and understanding of piano increases. She emphasized how nurturing my daughter's love of music is most important. This was music to my ears :)

Usually I don't write reviews. I am compelled to write for Feng. I've experience finding/working with many music teachers over the years for different instruments (piano, flute, sax) for kids. I think Feng is the best, he is so passionate about music, he encourages the kids. He teaches thoroughly - you can tell he knows lot about saxophone. I would definitely recommend Feng!!

David is not only a great musician and educator but also a delightful human. We began using David six years ago as a piano teacher for my two boys. Since then my eldest moved on to acoustic and electric guitar and my youngest electric and stand up bass. Somewhere along the way I began to take guitar lessons also (I was David's most bearded student at age 48). David always came prepared to lead but also to follow, he often asked what we were listening to and taught us how to play it. His ability to listen to a piece of music and transcribe it always left me amazed, we have several notebooks full of songs we learned individually or played as a group. After a shoulder injury David continued to impress by teaching me music theory instead of our usual lesson. I could go on forever, David made a positive impact on my family and feel fortunate to have met him.
