I adopt some ear training for younger students as they develop a sense of pitch and theoretical knowledge for adults who learn better with checkpoints. I've performed in masterclasses with Dr. Rebecca Henderson, Dr. Nancy Ambrose King, Dr. Stephen Taylor, Frank Rosenwein, Art Lande, and Elizabeth Blumenstock. A board-certified Music Therapist with the American Music Therapy Association, I completed a six-month clinical internship providing Music Therapy for patients in end-of-life hospice care. I also have practicum experience with children with developmental disabilities, at-risk youth, and the elderly. For beginner piano students I use Alfred's books, which has different beginner levels for different ages. At first I perform my first lesson, where I decide which beginner book will much with the student, then I recommend an appropriate book for them. I also don't mind at all another company of books if they prefer so. For beginner violin students I recommend String builder or Essential elements books. They both are good skill building books. When students start on their instrument I encourage the parents to be part of the lesson so they can help and encourage practicing at home. When the students are at a beginning stage I have them practice about 20-30 minutes a day. At the beginning the student is getting adjusted to the instrument and I don't want to push them too much. I use an organized step by step method as a general rule, depending on the students age and ability, seeking to have each student master the fundamentals of rhythm, note reading, technique and expression in a logical easy to understand way. I require practice at least 4 days a week to ensure progress. For preschool age children, I use the Wunderkeys method. I seek to minimize frustration, encourage students to e-mail with questions, use games as a learning tool and assign pieces they like and pieces that are standard repertoire. Read More
