The initial meeting with a student is where we start. Has there been any musical training. Is there the ability to read music. Interest in the instrument. It is a two way interview where we begin to know each other on terms that we will be dealing with if we choose to work together. Practice is most important in learning an instrument. And I play along with the students to help with their intonation. Read More

I am goofy kind of gal who is a kid at heart so, while I do not allow the students to goof-off during practice, I definitely encourage the children to have fun and take breaks. Learning a new skill is taxing on the brain so I do enjoy inserting some brain-breaks here and there, when necessary. I'm also a very big sticker advocate! Most children enjoy them, and I love rewarding them after completing a song we've been working on. Read More

I am a versatile multi-instrumentalist who loves to share the joys of music with students of all backgrounds, ages, and levels of experience. My career as a professional performing musician started even before I began my collegiate studies, as I began professional piano accompanying services while still in high school, and played in my first community orchestra before beginning my undergraduate studies. Throughout the last 17 years, I earned a bachelor's and two graduate degrees in instrumental performance, first focusing on viola and piano, and later, cello. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leanord's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp of their instrment and the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire and tecnique exercises. I will try to find out what the student is interested in to help guide my instruction and keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter the age or ability level. Read More

My preferred method for very young students has been the Suzuki method, as I believe a well trained ear continues to be our best musical learning tool later in life as well. When students progress to reading, the full line of Suzuki books can of course be utilized, but it is very advisable to incorporate additional materials and techniques. The Kodaly method is also useful and even more traditional 'reading first' techniques can be used if requested. Read More

Since everyone has a different way of seeing and understanding things, focusing on student's needs is my priority. Each lesson is tailored specifically for the student so that the information is well understood Beginner students are taught the principles behind the proper posture and correct handling of the instrument for better intonation. For intermediate students, basic musical theory lessons are added. Intermediate-advanced and advanced lessons contain listening skills as well musical thinking lectures. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
