Teaching for 12 years and playing for 18 years has really inspired me to cater to every age, and the student’s personal goals and their particular culture as there are no limitations to my style. I have experience creating music programs for church ministries, learning centers, music academies and more. My teaching experience started at age 12 with Alesia Byrd Johnson. I worked with toddlers and as they aged I would continue in their classes while adding the next group of children. Since then I have taught private lessons in homes, studios, private schools, and after graduating from Michigan State University- I taught public school orchestra, band, and choir from Prek-12 in Michigan and then Georgia. I started playing the cello in 5th grade after attending a Middle School showcase where they showed off all their clubs to rising 6th grade students. I ran away from my mother after seeing the Cellist play and went to talk to him. She found me an hour later in the Orchestra room playing with the instrument. Watching students learn and progress brings me so much joy. For younger students who are energetic, I love to incorporate games and activities to keep them engaged while we continue to learn important aspects on the violin. Encouragement and setting a steady pace is key for all ages and levels. Acknowledging big and small accomplishments keeps the students motivated and proud of their progress. Following a long, fun and successful 20+ year career as a pro musician, I became a full-time music teacher. I teach the basics using a combination of methods, customizing lessons to each student's skill level, ability level, and interest (classical/folk/modern). For beginning students I suggest using the Suzuki Method, or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once each student is ready to move beyond the fundamentals, I find exercises and solos to best fit and improve their skill level for recital performances, competitions, strings class/orchestra, or other activities. I generally will start off students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. I generally will start off on Classical music, but if the student has a request I will help them work on that song unless I know that their skill level isn't at the point where they can perform that song.
