By 19 i had about 20 students from the age of 5 all the way to age 45, from beginner to advanced levels. I only want my students to have a positive experience when leaving our lesson. I am constantly letting them know what they've done well, along with what goals we need to work on. I focus on the sandwich method, which is one positive trait, something to work on, then another positive trait. Everyone is different, so their learning pace is different as well. I do expect them to put at least some effort in at home via practicing (although I know things come up sometimes), otherwise it would be hard to find progress when they haven't practiced what we were working on. Due to my training in the Suzuki Violin Method, I often start my beginner students with Suzuki Book 1. However, I supplement this music with exercises found in other method books, as well as fun games and activities that help my younger students learn more about the violin. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the lesson books you or I provide, preferably Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Andy has recorded records for various bands and three independent film soundtracks in addition to playing for our troops on a USO tour. At California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Andy studied classical and world percussion.
