I believe each student is different. Therefor, lessons should differ depending on each students particular needs, taste in music, and age. I would never treat an adult student like I would a young student and vice versa. I always try to set weekly goals with each of my students in order for them to have something to work towards on a consistent basis. I teach both the Classical and Suzuki methods. I have students of all ages so it varies which student is learning which method. The best for children is the Suzuki method that is widely used in the USA. Classical methods can be used when I teach young adults and adults. I find this method helps the student with dependency of string books and helps to harbor curiosity to the vast world of music and methods beyond one book. I see the participation in playing musical instruments as much of a fun activity as it is a physical and mental workout. After receiving my Associate in Science in Music I went straight into a studio and started teaching a range of students from 4 - 24 years old, and from the never-picked-up-an-instrument-before to I-can't-wait-for-the-competition levels. For violin, viola, cello and bass, I teach the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method is based strongly on memory and takes a systematic approach to introducing music of increasing difficulty. For classical guitar, I start off with the Frederick Noad system, "Solo Guitar Playing", and scales. As skill level increases, I assign more etudes and standard guitar repertoire. For acoustic guitar, I teach almost exclusively finger-picking. I teach the same high standard skills for acoustic guitar that I teach for classical, but concentrate on masterpieces of the repertoire. Read More
