You cannot expect to learn a music skill and be able to use it without practice. This is like a marathon runner who cannot expect to run far without training. Much of the frustration students find when it comes to improvement comes from the misunderstanding that something learned in music stays learned. My work with the DCYOP, an El-Sistema inspired program, involves teaching the basics of playing the violin, viola, cello and music theory, adjudicating students’ progress, leading sectionals and full rehearsals in various DC schools, some from the most underserved communities. Highlights are having all the different schools come together for a large performance at the Kennedy Center and the students performances with Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Esperanza Spalding. I’ve also facilitated many youth orchestra performances and summer camps as string teaching artist in DC and Maryland showcasing that I can motivate the students to a high quality performance regardless of the amount of time. I began teaching lessons part time five years ago when I was an undergraduate. I have worked with all ages, from young students to teenagers to adult learners. I also have experience coaching small ensembles at summer string camps. I love to give my students opportunities to play music together and for each other. When I was taking lessons as a young student, I found that the community that my teacher fostered at his studio by holding recitals, weekly group classes and holiday events was just as important to my improvement as my one-on-one time with my teacher. Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills.
