I like the student to pick their area of interest of musical genre. From there, we develop the style in accordance to the students desire.Chord theory, structure, soloing are all part of the training.Students pick the songs and we take it from there. While method books are available, most are boring examples of how to attain artistry. In our lessons, I use proven individual methods that will enhance the students ability to achieve. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I strive to find an individual approach to each student and it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. While daily practice is necessary for quicker progress, not every student has the time for it. So I teach my students how to use the time allocated for personal practice more effectively and how to develop good practice habits. Read More

I have over 15 years of teaching experience with students of all ages, from 3 year-olds to adults.  I am an upbeat and engaging teacher who focuses on proper form and technique, while maintaining the student's interest and encouraging creativity.  I teach a combination of Suzuki and traditional methods, catered to the needs of the individual. Many of my students have had leadership positions youth orchestras and have won regional competitions.   I feel that is very important for the music teacher to be an active and professional musician as well as a great teacher in order to inspire and to be a good role model for the students. I was first introduced to viola through the Suzuki method, and so I am extremely familiar and comfortable with that method and have mostly taught that method as well. If the student is in school, as mentioned above, I will usually start by seeing what they need to learn and have been doing/learning there, and work from that point. For students more advanced or wanting to learn outside of the Suzuki method, I have many "starter" books at my home that I am happy to teach from for learning notes, rhythms, and other short songs, and will suggest etude books and scale books, such as Carl Flesch. I draw inspiration largely from my Rudolf Steiner-inspired pre-college education and my Carl Orff-inspired higher education. Waldorf/Steiner education "emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils" while the Orff Approach "combines music, movement, drama, and speech into lessons that are similar to child's world of play." I started teaching in high school, and I've been teaching consistently for the past 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
