In 2011, I accepted the position of Visual Caption Head with Weber State Indoor Percussion and helped them win back to back Outstanding Visual Caption awards at the Intermountain Percussion Association Championships. I also trained the 2010 Drum Corps International Drum Majors of the Year for both Open and World Class. Once an optimal mentality is reached, I like to have the student play any prepared materials. During this time, I am listening as if I am the one playing and how I would go about bettering myself. I will ask the student what their thoughts are, where their priorities are, and how they would go about bettering themselves. I first began teaching private lessons as a summer job while still a teenager in high school, and I've loved teaching ever since. Encouraging a love of the instrument (and music in general) in younger students is something I'm very passionate about, but I'm always willing to help older students find that love as well. My beginner students use the Essential Elements book. With that book, you can learn fundamentals in trumpet technique as well as counting. For all other students, I use the Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies book and selections from the Arban's Conservatory Method. We cover a lot of etudes and techniques from the Arban's book. I also believe collaboration is important in lessons so often we will play duets together in lessons. Read More
