I am not a fan of "rote learning" so my lessons tend to include a large amount of cognitive thinking by me constantly asking questions and making you pay attention to your own playing habits. I am a huge fan of the Arban's technique book for brass, but I like to keep lessons fun with songs that challenge my students at their level. Once the student has progressed to the intermediate level - solid fundamentals, musicianship, and a desire for learning - I introduce solo repertoire. Practice doesn't make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect! The best way to develop a skill is to work consistently and carefully, which is why I encourage all of my students not just to practice until they get it right, but to practice until they can't get it wrong. That being said, students must work at their own pace for this method to be effective. The second is that I inspire each of them to perform at their best at all times. That inspiration is based solely on what the student sees as inspiring.
