I have studied at Oberlin Conservatory and Rutgers State University and studied with some of the best teachers. I studied jazz trumpet for my bachelor's and Masters degrees. I moved to NYC in 2009 and have performed with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Kim Burrell, Geri Allen and Wallace Toney. I taught at the community outreach program at Rutgers State University and have been a teacher with Musika for 10 years. I enjoy hearing the students natural abilities, understanding what kind of music pours out of them, acknowledge that, and from there we develop it. At the same time, direct the student with technique, theory and any other tools that will facilitate the music they are passionate about. My teaching approach focuses heavily on the fundamentals of the instrument and its relationship to Music... All students are different so I tend to approach slowly and access their reactions to my suggestions. It is so important not to make a student feel pressured to achieve, especially in Music... I want their interest and will to excel to be their own personal choice and quest. My particular brand of brass pedagogy has roots that trace back to the Chicago Symphony's legendary Bud Herseth. I believe in the pursuit of mastery of many of the basic techniques of brass playing - air movement, flexibility, and tone are the most important pieces of what we do as brass players, and I have collected an arsenal of exercises to build skill in these areas. I use a collection of techniques from a wide range of trumpet players from Ray Mase to Allen Vizzutti to Michael Sachs and will use these approaches to define musical outlook and technique. Read More
