For beginning students, I try to figure out what if any familiarity with the instrument or connected genres the student already has and plan to orient lessons around that. If they're absolute beginners with no specific interests yet, as is often the case with children, I focus on teaching fundamentals of the instrument's technique, music theory relevant to reading sheet music and understanding scales, keys, and time signatures. I begain teaching as a band assistant in college. I would lead sectionals and work with students who where struggiling one on one. As I gained experiance my role and responsibly grew and I began to run rehearsals and plan for concerts. One aspect of lessons that I emphasise is musicality. For years 1 & 2, we will go through the "red" and "blue" books (Standard of Excellence) together, in order to formulate the right habits with embouchure, breathing, posture, and learning to read and play the correct notes. Once some headway has been made, we can begin "Arban's" for technical studies, Bai Lin's "Lip Flexibilities" for advance warm up and excersies, and Rochut's "Melodious Etudes" for solo material. Teaching music is one of the most rewarding experiences, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I believe that studying diverse styles of music is very important. I encourage my students to listen to all kinds of music outside of their own genre, as having different influences creates a more well rounded musician. Inspiration and motivation are huge factors when it comes to private teachers.
