When it comes to teaching, I find the most important thing is that we work towards the goal of what the student wants to learn - in the case of their preferred styles/genres of music, and the songs that they really enjoy. Every student has their own individual skill level and pace that can be developed and worked around. There I cultivated my skills as a soloist, ensemble player, and accompanist for several student recitals. I received his Bachelors of the Arts in Musical Composition and Psychology, with Honors in both, in 2009. While working towards my degree I began teaching both group classes and private lessons in the Elk Grove area eventually expanding to the greater Sacramento area and Davis during my almost 20 years of teaching. I became a member of the Music Teacher’s Association of California (MTAC) in 2010 and held many positions in the organization for the Yolo County Branch, including Chair of the Composer’s Today program (a program that holds an annual recital for students who compose their own music), Recording Secretary, and I'm currently finishing my tenure as Branch President. For beginning and intermediate students on piano, I generally teach out of Piano Adventures as a supplement, but teach other songs the student requests. For voice lessons, I tailor my supplemental book teaching to the students individual learning abilities, as well as learning songs they are passionate about. My philosophy on learning music is that a students should NEVER play a song that they hate! I tailor my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun, no matter what their skill level.
