During my internship with Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Center  and volunteer work with The Cavalier Music Enrichment Program (both based in Baltimore, Maryland), I have taught music to over 250 students. From general music theory to specific instruction in brass, woodwind, and percussion techniques; I have had the privilege to work with students of various ages, spanning from sixth graders to college students. Music has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing the piano when I was 7 and from there my love for music grew. I received a BM in Composition from SUNY Fredonia where I served on the executive board for Ethos New Music Society and taught private bass lessons to non-music majors. In May 2013, I was awarded the Ethos Laureate Prize in Composition for my chamber opera Randalls Leaf and, most recently, won Peabody's Macht Orchestra Composition Competition in 2015 forPillars, erased. For young beginners, I start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as they are probably already working in this book if they are in bad at school.  Outside of that, I'll typically incorporate key beginning excercises from the Arban's Book to help develop the students sound and chops.  This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years.  Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital. My methods vary between each student. For beginning students, that are not learning in a school setting, I typlically start with Hal Lenard's Essential Elements For Band. Once the student had progressed, I will start to introduce solo repetoire that the student will be instested in, which could be pop tunes or other type of music. This will encourage the student's passion for music to grow. If the student is in a school setting, then the student will work on all of the music for school and solo repetoire. Read More
