During the fall I also have been a low brass technician for a local marching band. Finally I have played in many pit performances for local high schools. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as my own individual exercises written specifically for each student's needs as they develop. After they have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire and etudes for their first recital performance. I'm adamant about learning exercises from the "Arbans Book". This book is essential the brass bible that teaches proper fundamental techniques while developing reading skills. We will extensively on flexibility and scales through out all stages of development as well as intonation on the instrument. I've found that students always are capable of more than they believe. Encouraging regular practice and finding music that makes the students want to practice is most important.
