Many students get down on themselves because they can't play something or they make a mistake. This is a deficit mindset that stunts growth long term. Throughout my life I have been an active member of bands, choirs, and drama. In high school I was a part of every ensemble available including the Lockport Marching Porters, jazz bands, pep bands, and the top group the Wind Symphony for three years. Simultaneously all four years I participated in every choir I could, as well as the spring musicals, often with lead roles. In college I was part of the Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Bands, the Marching Illini: Baritone Squad-Leader, British Brass Band, Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble/quartets, and the Varsity Mens Glee Club chorus. It's my goal to engage students through music they already love, and (at the same time) introduce them to new music ideas and musical concepts/challenges. Regardless of ability, I think it is important to cater to the goals of my students, and help them achieve whatever they want in their own playing, whether it is a difficult piece to learn, wanting better articulation or increasing range and endurance. Whatever the student wants to learn with trumpet, I can help them with. Reaching a high level of playing has required struggle and effort on my part, but my teachers were able to consistently motivate me to become a better player to do this. Read More
