Learning an instrument is like building a relationship with that instrument and discovering what sounds you can create together. Lessons typically introduce tone production, breathing, articulation, basic fingerings, rhythm, reading music, and the first scales and repertoire. The priority is building good habits from the beginning rather than rushing into more difficult material before the foundation is ready. Intermediate players begin developing greater consistency, range, endurance, flexibility, articulation, sight-reading, and musical understanding. My master's degree in trumpet performance at the University of Denver included a teaching assistantship: I taught trumpet lessons, coached brass quintets, trumpet ensembles, and more. I had a private studio in Denver and again in Cleveland, where I was before relocating to DC. In Cleveland I taught full-time and ended up with over fifty private students.
