I am very fortunate to have studied privately with many great teachers with varied teaching styles and philosophies which has helped me become a well-rounded educator.  I have also had the orpportunity to perform with numerous ensembles throughout the United States and around the world. My musicial experience started at the age of 7. This was the  beginning of my formal classical piano training.  In high school I stated learning more about the fundamental concepts of Jazz. While attending Cal State for three years I quickly developed and focused on arrangment and composition for all types of music. My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. For beginning students who are not musically literate, I emphasize a program that focuses on the aquisition of skills to read music proficiently followed by a basic program that helps students get the basics of their instrument down. For intermediate musicians, I focus more on taking their basic skills and expanding on them to help them discover new abilities and progress further in their musical development. Of course, everything depends on what you, the student, want to learn! For younger students that are just starting, I've found the Accent on Achievement books to be very helpful in developing the basics of playing. From there, Classically-focused players would learn solo repertoire, Jazz-focused players would learn standards and improvisation, and all the other genres would begin to narrow down their appropriate fields.
