I start each student with a diagnostic lesson where I assess the strong points of their playing, and I also identify the areas that could use work. After that initial lesson I formulate a customized curriculum that is aimed at improving the technical, musical, and theoretical aspects of the student to create a well-rounded musician. I believe that incorporating solo repertoire into lessons is important as well. Exercises are important, but I believe that the implementation of new skills with repertoire is key to solidifying the skills that the student is working on. Read More

Throughout my life I have been an active member of bands, choirs, and drama. In high school I was a part of every ensemble available including the Lockport Marching Porters, jazz bands, pep bands, and the top group the Wind Symphony for three years. Simultaneously all four years I participated in every choir I could, as well as the spring musicals, often with lead roles. In college I was part of the Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Bands, the Marching Illini: Baritone Squad-Leader, British Brass Band, Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble/quartets, and the Varsity Mens Glee Club chorus. I have battled with ADHD my whole life and I distinctly remember daydreaming during many of my classes in college, retaining little-to-no information. It is very difficult to engage with a topic as complex as music, but it is crucial to absorb every second. Not every person is going to become a musician, as we all have our own passions and dreams. I want my students to find joy, acceptance, and relief from music, not dread and loathing. I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" Every piece of music elicits some response from us, and I fully believe that recognition and further development of that response can change the way we perceive music. Read More
