Instruments: Trumpet Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder

My methods vary between each student. For beginning students, that are not learning in a school setting, I typlically start with Hal Lenard's Essential Elements For Band. Once the student had progressed, I will start to introduce solo repetoire that the student will be instested in, which could be pop tunes or other type of music. This will encourage the student's passion for music to grow. If the student is in a school setting, then the student will work on all of the music for school and solo repetoire. Read More

It is my belief that there are three components to learning and improving at music: skill and technique, musical creativity, and, most importantly, the genuine desire to learn and play music. My teaching balances improvisation-guided exploration with firm technical training. It is important for students to be excited about discovering new things as well as being encouraged by achieving clearly-defined realistic goals, which we discuss at every lesson. In addition to this balance, I encourage a lot of listening. Music is a 'heard art' and learning to listen attentively is key to musical growth. To this end, listening assignments (and likely additional suggestions!) are usually given in every lesson, determined by the student's interests, area of study, and current focus. Read More
