Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. It is very refreshing to be able to see the enthusiasm and eagerness of a student in lessons. As someone who still routinely takes lessons, I know firsthand how important the relationship between teacher and student can be. I’m very passionate about fostering a friendly, open environment in which students feel comfortable learning, making mistakes, and voicing opinions. In my time teaching and taking lessons, I’ve found that the growth that comes from one on one attention is like no other, and that the solid foundation that private lessons build prepares students for success in other musical settings, as well as in the classroom and, eventually, the workplace. My musical background began when at 7 yrs. old I was playing the piano with my mothers instruction. I became a self taught student in brass and piano and later was accepted as a Music major to West Chester University. During HS I became known as a trumpet soloist in Regional and State Bands and in the Salvation Army brass program a cornet soloist. I've taught in public and private schools as an instrumental music teacher and later had my own studio of 50 students. Read More

For beginning students, I typically use Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence (whichever they are not using in school if any). I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. At that point, I will begin to split instruction into flow studies, flexibility, tone, air movement, and articulation, drawing from a variety of books created by some of the world's leading brass musicians. My teaching style is very "go with the flow." Each day is a new opportunity to learn a little more about music and your chosen instrument. Each lesson is a time where we can delve deeply into one piece of music, or jump around to several different topics. Of course, there is always room for structure and I make sure that we stay on track! There are so many different aspects of each instrument to cover, but there no need to get bogged down with complicated acronyms and over complex methodology. Read More
