In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. For Beginning Students, I suggest using either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Rubank's series of books starting with the Elementary Method book in addition to a warm-up that is essential to what they need to work on. Once my students have a grasp of the fundamentals, I suggest a step up in method books to both Rubank Intermediate series and Bordogni Etudes.
