For beginner and novice students I start with discovering where they at playing wise and knowing their instrument. Repertoire wise I believe simple Arban studies and nursery rhymes are all a beginner needs to know to improve their skills. For beginning students, I typically start with the Ed Sueta beginning trombone book (this is the book I learned from when I first started). Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. As a jazz musician, I can also instruct students on jazz improvisation, harmony, theory, composition, ear training, etc. No matter what the student is interested in, I will guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun. My teaching methods are essentially designed to give the student maximum command of his/her skills on their chosen instrument. First, all students must know the music essentials and the masters, especially on their instrument. Technique must be perfected by daily practice. I seek from every individual the highest level that they can attain to. No one knows exactly what that is but what is surprising and refreshing are the boundaries once thought impossible to accomplish have been broken. Read More
