My particular brand of brass pedagogy has roots that trace back to the Chicago Symphony's legendary Bud Herseth. I believe in the pursuit of mastery of many of the basic techniques of brass playing - air movement, flexibility, and tone are the most important pieces of what we do as brass players, and I have collected an arsenal of exercises to build skill in these areas. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book,and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. For beginning students, I typically start with the Ed Sueta beginning trombone book (this is the book I learned from when I first started). Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn.
