I find that the best way to motivate a student to practice and learn is to play music that they know. I teach beginning and intermediate students out of the Walter Beeler method, which provides a good progression of theory along with recognizable music. I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed.
