I like to working with kids to encourage them to continue playing music and to build up a steady regimen of practice and self evaluation. I believe that students need to be taught to teach themselves. As a teacher, my role is to guide the student toward realizations with appropriate materials and information. However, the most beneficial learning occurs when the students feels they were an active participant in the discovery(ah-ha! moments). I typically start without the instrument at first and focus on breathing, posture, and building muscle memory with slide positions. With intermediate to advanced students, I like to focus on the theory/science behind trombone playing.
