For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. I have been teaching music lessons in schools and privately since 1994. I currently teach elementary general music and 4th/5th grade band lessons in a Brooklyn public school-the New York City Department of Education. Before 2012, I was a travelling teacher employed by Paul Effman Music Service to serve Catholic Schools in the Diocese Of Brooklyn. --My goal as a music teacher has always been to encourage children to love music from childhood to the latest years of their lives. I look to be sure that each student enjoys the material as well as music as a whole. Therefore, each student should be able to progress at their own pace. As a student progresses, I do have an admittedly bad habit of speeding up material a bit too much, so I encourage all students to let me know when something is too much for them. As i look to select material, I like to do a 5 minute test run of the piece to ensure that students enjoy the material before assigning it. Read More

They can span the range from learning a new scale to realizing that they need to clean their horns more often. I also try my best as a teacher to acknowledge growth and get students excited with every single discovery. I have found that as musicians, we are our most critical and brutal critics, so I make it a point to allow students the opportunity to celebrate their own triumphs no matter how big or small. I have spent the past three years living in Miami where I completed my Masters Degree in music education. During this time I was an active trumpet player in south Florida playing with orchestras, brass bands, jazz groups, and quite regularly latin bands due to the popularity of salsa/latin styles in that region. My Bachelors degree was completed in 2006 at the Univeristy of Delware. I completed their music teacher preparation program, participating in both educational studies and a wide range of music ensembles including wind band, brass choir, marching band, and jazz band. I prefer to let students advance at their own pace so that they don't feel rushed and get discouraged. For younger students/beginners I keep an open line to the parents for extra support. I bring my instrument to the lesson and demonstrate as I teach. I center on encouragement and emphasizing a student's successes. I will change a lesson book/publisher if I sense that the student is either struggling with a particular book, or is not being challenged in a particular method and is becoming bored. Read More
