My methods are different for every student, but I always start with fundamentals. This includes scales, exercises to improve sound and intonation, reading, writing, improvisation, and most importantly listening. Depending on the path the student choses, some areas will be focused on more than others. I will often introduce more advanced concepts early if the student displays interest in them. I am not the kind of instructor who will say "play your etudes first and then we can talk about improvisation." I almost quit shortly after I started music because I had an instructor with that outlook. Read More

I'm a firm believer in transparent and respectful communication. I work diligently along side the parent(s)/guardian(s) and student(s) to develop a positive rapport with them. Each lesson is goal oriented and recorded. Read More

Music is supposed to be fun, dynamic, and a way of expression. So I never attach myself or the student to a given program or method, but I offer a tailored program that bettersuits the student needs. I like to explore the student's musical tastes, skills, and to introduce new ones. My teaching methods are a mixture of discovery and practice that may or may not use formal books and methods. I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and helping plant and grow a love for music. I got a degree in music from NOVA Community College in 2012 and am working on my BM from George Mason in Music Education. Right now, I perform all over the NOVA area with many community bands, a personal sax quartet, and I am even a part of a Balalaika Symphony Orchestra. Read More

For young beginners, I generally will start with a beginning method book (such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements) but the book will depend on the instrument as well. For older students, I want to know what kind of music they enjoy playing or listen to, and guide them along to reach their goals--whether that be to play in a band, write and record an album, or just become a better player!
