Each student learns differently, therefore I will be constantly working to see what style of teaching works best for each individual. I have found that constant encouragement keeps students engaged and eager to learn and to let the music itself challenge the student. By finding out what a student is most interested in we can keep their love of music alive and use it to help them further learn to reach their goals. Read More

I usually start with asking what kind of music students would like to learn and go from there. For a student starting band at school, typically I start with the method book they are going to use and move on to the Rubank method book series. For adult beginners, I start with the Essential Elements book for Alto Saxophone to get a good understanding of notes and the basics of how to read music. Read More

Students are provided with a lesson book from which the bulk of their assignments will come and a theory book containing written activities. As a general rule, a student will have one or two assignments from each book per week. The assignments are coordinated so as to reinforce concepts discussed in lessons. This allows the student to make connections between the lessons and the solo repertoire. Once a student has mastered the basics, I will add supplemental material taken from the Fabers' PlayTime Piano series. Read More

For example, it will be easier to play a chromatically technical excerpt in a band audition when the student already knows how to play a full range chromatic scale. Read More

In the time between then, I have been involved as a private instructor, small chamber coach, full band director, and covered any other position possible for many schools; I have ample experience in teaching and performing many styles common in the school system. My experience has led me to find ways to work with students as individuals, and adapt to their wants and needs to keep them engaged in the learning process. Read More
