Technique as well as theory are equally important. It is also important to have fun while learning. I like to use the Hal Leonard lesson books combined with excersises that I have created. I can also teach songs requested by students and explain and demonstrate how theory and technique apply to the tune. Improvising and playing along with other musicians in songs or jams is highly recomended. Understanding what each student wants to get out of the lesson is important. Read More

I am lucky enough to be associated with this thing called music. As a kid, I was introduced to the piano by my dear mother, a pipa player (traditional Chinese guitar), who has always admired western musical instruments. I was never too serious until my teenage years when I met several teachers and friends (to this day) who have shown me how to read music properly and what it means to read it properly. Read More

It's important that the students set goals for their playing as well, this helps with the self-motivation to practice. It could be something as simple as next week I want to play the single note that has been giving me trouble, or as advanced as I want to be able to play this solo piece from memory in three months. Progression in private lessons is all about the motivation of the student, so I try to give them as much motivation as possible. Read More

Personal success and happiness from playing music are the most important things for a student to achieve when taking lessons from me. I will work students hard in lessons, but treat them fairly and expect only what I know they are capable of achieving. I may differ slightly from other teachers in that when it comes to outside practice requirements, as I will teach to he amount of effort the student shows me. Read More

I believe that every student is unique and deserves a unique approach from myself as a teacher, so I do not stick to regimented lesson plans. I work each week to plan out how best to convey the information needed, but if things need to change in the lesson, I adapt to provide what is needed for the student to still grow. There should be no lesson where the student walks away having learned nothing. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2016, when I enrolled in a degree program in secondary education at Southern Connecticut State University. At Southern, I learned very much about human development, and teaching methods and strategies. I also gained over 120 hours of classroom observation experience. Upon graduating with a B.A. degree in Physics (Southern doesn't offer music education degrees), I was hired as a Paraprofessional in a New Haven Public School. Read More

For beginning students, I typically will start them on a method book such as The Yamaha series, and start them on the basic pedagogy of the clarinet and saxophone,ie; putting the instrument together, putting the reed on the mouthpiece, setting the embouchure, etc. I will emphasize the importance of practicing; beginners, 5 times a week for 20 minutes, so they can succeed in learning their instrument. For Intermediate students, in Middle and High School for example, I will include the reportoire they are playing in their school performing groups, so they can excel in those. Read More
