I like to use a wide variety of materials, from classical to jazz music.  CLARINET: For clarinet students, I use "standard" conservatory etude and scale books (such as the Rose Studies and Behrmann Studies).  I also use the Jamey Abersold Jazz Methods, which feature CD 'play-a-long' recordings of jazz music.  I also have my students perform a wide range of solo music, from 'standards' like the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to 20th century repertoire by composers like Bernstein, Copland and others.  I think it is important for students to be able to play jazz and improvise, so I teach them about Blues and how to play jazz, as well as classical music. I believe that it's best to learn by example, and in music this is often by demonstrating with the instrument. I will always have my instrument out to play along, or demonstrate what I am expecting. I expect my students to practice what is assigned to them so we can both have a productive session with each other, however I do understand that life happens. I try different techniques throughout the lesson to ensure that what I'm teaching is resonating with the student. Read More

I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music.
