For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. When I went to grad school I made principal saxophone in the wind ensemble and played at Carnegie Hall! I have been teaching since age 15 (1999). In addition to extensive performing experience on clarinet, I have functioned as a piano accompanist, choir member, and praise band member through the years. As noted above, I teach clarinet, saxophone, flute, and piano. As a teacher, I try not to stress rote learning but instead focus on explanations for why music works the way it does. I find that music of any genre is much easier to study if you have an understanding of the framework of what you practice. To that end, I stress technical study that works towards grooming pieces or songs for performance and make sure that my students have a complete understanding of both music and their instrument. Originally from Dallas, TX, I was always interested in music but never thought of it as more than a hobby. I was a solo performer playing shows around the Dallas/Fort Worth area and in a popular Salsa band for years before I finally decided to get back into school and see where this musical journey would take me.
