I have been teaching for 5 years in both private lesson situations and and group lesson situations. I enjoy teaching beginner piano and flute and teaching all levels on the clarinet and saxophones. I have taught in both the classical and jazz idioms. I have taught as young as seven and as old as seventh and I enjoy seeing what curious students bring to the lesson. My technique for teaching students vary depending on the student and their competency. If the student is a beginner I like to start them with the basics of theory and rhythm by explaining the circle of 5ths, major scales, minor scales, augmented, and diminished scales. Then once the student grasps the very basic concepts of music theory I then either have them bring in a song the would like to play or I will give them variations of Ferling Etudes or Bach Etudes to establish a solid foundation in music theory. Beginning students, especially children, need more guidance and structure to the lessons to get started, but its still important to keep them interested , engaged and having fun, so Ill typically integrate lessons on basic technique with songs that children already know.
