With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. More advanced students would focus on scales and long tones with etudes for fundamentals and repertoire for solo playing and performances. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director.
