Hi! My name is Sean. I've been teaching saxophone lessons for about eight years now. I am highly trained & I'm working on my doctorate in saxophone currently at the University of Colorado Boulder. I play in various situations including rock bands, classical ensembles, jazz ensembles, and even worship ensembles. As a k-12 certified music teacher I have taught music lessons privately and to ensembles. I have also taught in the classroom setting as a long term substitute band director. I like to figure out what their reason is and progress accordingly. If it's a young student looking to continue music throughout their school career, I will make sure they learn how to read sufficiently and I will make sure they know how to play with peers by performing with the student as an accompanist. My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I like to think I'm a laid-back kind of guy, though I can get loud and boisterous sometimes when a student figures something hard out. I wonder sometimes if I don't get more excited about a student's breakthrough than he does! My wife sometimes tells me I have no "indoor voice," lol. I don't give grades (except for my college students, because I have to), but if I did, the grade would be either "A" or "I," as in incomplete, as in do it over until it's great. Read More
