I taught piano and recorder for over 10 years at Church Street School for Music and Art in Tribeca, and have worked as a teaching artist with The New York POPS since 1992. Currently Im coaching a jazz ensemble at an NYC public middle school and am working with kids that might not have the resources to study privately. When teaching younger students, I prioritize developing a passion for music through engaging repertoire and positive encouragement, while instilling proper technique and organized practice with weekly progressive assignments. I also establish practice expectations and share progress with parents. In every lesson I demonstrate concepts by performing various woodwinds and piano, and by singing. Advanced students work towards external goals established in consultation with both students and parents like school concerts, honor band/orchestra auditions, or college applications, encouraging students to grow their musical community outside of the lesson studio. One of the greatest benefits that my students get from me is my ability to teach. I wrap the learning around each student's personality. This has a lot to do with my master's research around cognitive learning . I teach students based on their desires. For example, if a student is interested in being a fireman then the lesson plans should be built around being a fireman. My saxophone students can expect a systematic approach toward learning.
