Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet Oboe
Like many of you I started playing in grade school. I wanted to play trumpet but I didn't turn in my permission slip in time so I had to wait another year. The next time I chose saxophone. I had a really wonderful instrumental music teacher who I credit to me being a musician today. She gets real embarrassed when I tell people that but it's true. I guess that's what inspires me to teach, I had a good teacher! Read More

I am an energetic woodwind multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator born and raised in Philadelphia, always open to musical opportunities regardless of the style. Since graduating from Temple University Boyer College of Music in 2021, I've been hard at work leading my solo fusion jazz project, GPS (Gabe Preston Sounds or Galactic Prism Sounds), with our debut album [to the stratosphere] currently available on all streaming platforms and a new album in the works later this year. For four years during my undergraduate studies, I got to spend an hour a week with Ralph Bowen’s gentle, understated method of teaching. He worked to get to know me personally, and then crafted lessons around my specific needs. With surgical precision, he conveyed information and assigned work and entirely because of his teachings, I improved a tremendous amount while loving music, myself, and him. Every student is different – this fact is cause for the gnarliest and most beautiful moments in education. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone
As a performer, I have appeared as soloist and as a member or small and large chamber ensembles at venues such as Shermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, the Kimmel Center, the Fenway Center in Boston, Tenri Cultural Institute and SPECTRUM NYC. I enjoy working with living composers and have played for people such as Jennifer Higdon, Michael Djupstrom, Matthew Greenbaum, Raoul Pleskow, William Bolcom, etc. I am committed to the presentation of new music because I feel as if it is just as important as the classical canon and more relevent than any other time to the world we live in today. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I structure my lessons in the same way I structure my own personal practice. I usually start off with a few technical exercises, then cover some theory, and then work on repertoire. How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. A beginner tends to need more time on technique, whereas someone who has an audition or recital coming up will spend most of their time on repertoire. Read More

I love the learning process and to see students progress through the stages of learning an instrument. I taught myself to play the piano before I started formal lessons. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. During my studies at the University of South Alabama, a new program was started in MIDI and I attended an extra year to master digital audio. Read More

My methods vary greatly depending on the student's goals and experience. Through the first few years of study, an emphasis on the fundamentals of music and instrumental skills is required. This typically takes the form of a beginning method book. For students beyond this phase of study, advanced technique work takes the form of scale, chord, and interval studies. I couple these with the development of repertoire that fits the needs and goals of that student. Read More
