Being able to read music is important, but what's more important is being able to hear music correctly. During the past few years, I found students often being interested in listening to music more than reading a written chart. If the student is a beginner I'll first try to give him an understanding of how the instrument work, how to have a proper sound and how to memorize the fingerings of the notes.
