In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! Clarinet for Beginners by Avrahm Galper is the method book that has given students a foundation for whatever level they aspire to achieve. Students are encouraged to tell me what they would like to play. Overcoming performance anxiety is an important skill. I am a Vietnamese-American saxophonist, pianist, composer, producer, and educator from Seattle, WA. I played lead alto saxophone in the jazz band at Garfield High School under the direction of the renowned Clarence Acox, and received a soloist award as well as a saxophone section award at Essentially Ellington jazz festival at Lincoln Center in New York in 2013. In 2018, I graduated with honors from Berklee College of Music, receiving my Bachelor of Music with concentrates in Contemporary Writing Production and Film Scoring on a saxophone scholarship. My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance. I believe that it's best to learn by example, and in music this is often by demonstrating with the instrument. I will always have my instrument out to play along, or demonstrate what I am expecting. I expect my students to practice what is assigned to them so we can both have a productive session with each other, however I do understand that life happens.
