I don't believe there's any such thing as a "one size fits all" method--lessons should be designed to meet the needs of the individual. I've taught at community centers, afterschool programs, and music stores since graduating in 2008, and started my own home studio about 2 years ago. I like to use relevant recordings to play along with as well as simply recording the student and playing it back during the lesson. For the youngest students, I begin with Music for Little Mozarts or John Thompson method books and a lot of music related games. Flash cards assist with retention of musical terms and notes. I also provide worksheets to help reinforce what the students learn. Later I add exercises to help with rhythm and agility.
