I graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and a Teaching Certificate in K-12 Vocal Music. I also hold a Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland. Aside from my credentials, I possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in teaching vocal and piano technique, embodied in an approachable, humorous and joyful presence. I specialize in teaching piano and music theory, giving my students a solid foundation in the language of music which can transfer to any instrument. Teaching is a true pleasure and a chance to give back. I enjoy helping others find their talents most of all because of the impact it has on their confidence and overall self-esteem.
Also an avid performer herself, Adrienne has toured with the New York Harlem Productions company of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, appearing as the Strawberry Woman in important European venues including the Komische Oper Berlin. She has sung in Carnegie Hall and appears on the Grammy Award winning CD “Songs of Innocence and Experience.” Perhaps her most noteworthy performance was singing for President Obama at his second term Inaugural Prayer Service. Locally, she is a regular chorister with the Washington National Opera, and in spring of 2013, she made her principal role debut as a “Madrigale” in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at the Kennedy Center. She continues to perform regularly in the local D.C. area and Europe, making her teaching vibrant, current and fresh.
I prefer Piano Adventurers for the series I use to teach piano at all levels. Their series is clear and has the proper scope and sequence to teach all ages. I supplement that technique book with a book for finger independence. Hanon virtuoso exercises and scale. As far as my singing method books, I use an Italian technique for singing. The book I use often time is Vaccai. Mainly I use my ears to determine what the student needs to focus on. All techniques begin with teaching the proper breath support.
I am passionate about helping others find their passion especially in music. I love teaching people how to make cool sounds with their voices. What I run into a lot is that a long time ago someone told My student that they could not sing and it's funny how people carry that with them throughout their lives so my job is to change that perception. It's not always easy. I tried to give my students clear expectations of what I want and try to make them feel comfortable by using humor and getting them to relax and not be afraid to make an ugly sound
Adrienne is amazing! Better than I could of ever asked for. I am extremely happy with my lessons with her and would recommend her to anyone!
