ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Associate Degree: Lake Land College, Bachelor Degree: Waldorf University
Overview:
I've been playing piano since I was four years old and my biggest goals for my students are for them to become confident and excited about music, whether they want to join a band, accompany choirs, perform, or just play for fun. I have taught all ages and firmly believe in the lifelong benefits of music lessons. I have experience in several musical venues including accompaniment, solo performance, group performance, church service, and musical theater and play everything from 80's rock standards to classical pieces. Being a pianist is one of the greatest joys of my life and I love sharing that with my students.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching in my own home and in student's homes for 9 years. I excel in teaching my students to be proficient sight readers because I want them to gain the ability to sit down with any piece of music and play it. I believe my job as a teacher has been fulfilled if my students reach a point where they no longer require my help. I also want my students to reap the benefits of music that go beyond performance at the keyboard, such as confidence, enhanced motor skills, challenging mental stimulation, a desire to learn, and emotional development. Most importantly, I want my students to enjoy music, so I enjoy discussing and evaluating their individual needs and goals often to make sure we are on the same page in reaching those goals.
METHODS USED
I start all of my beginning students in John Thompson Book One as it provides a great base to build on. After that lessons become very personalized to the student's learning styles as well as their individual goals. Adult beginners I supplement with Faber. I aim to get all of my students playing "real" music very quickly without sacrificing solid technique and fundamentals. I tend to spend half of a lesson on drills and half working on songs. I like to keep things hands-on and move through drills quickly enough to keep students engaged. I embrace the challenge of finding each student's learning style and adapting lessons based on what they best respond to.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is fairly methodical, as I have found some tactics to be reliable across the board. However, I also enjoy the beauty of personalized attention that comes with music lessons. I make efforts to keep an open, honest dialogue with my students regardless of age so I can hear what works and what doesn't for them. It feels so good for a teacher and a student when they reach that lightbulb moment together. Learning is a constant re-starting process, and as students grow their practice methods will need to change, as will my teaching methods. Being adaptable while holding to musical standards is important to me, as is finding what makes each student tick.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
