Recently I was hired as piano instructor for Quartertonez Music, in Washington DC. Also, I have had experience teaching and studying music education under my high school mentor, renowned music teacher Tim Savage; I was his student-teacher for a semester course at St. Lawrence University. Additionally, throughout my experience as his music student, his teaching approach has infused music education and facilitation lessons within the musical instruction itself. For older students, I want to know what kind of music they enjoy playing or listen to, and guide them along to reach their goals--whether that be to play in a band, write and record an album, or just become a better player! Beginners are mostly taught with alfred lesson books and learning how to position themselves and where the notes on the piano are first. I usually takes time after a few lesson to give them a chart to understand how to read notes, along with flashcards to study at home too. If the child is comfortable, when recitals occur they are able to participate. As far as more advanced students, I pick up where they are currently at and ask what they do know to see what pieces are best and what techniques need improvement. Read More

This means that I take into account the frustration that learning a new instrument can entail, and use therapeutic techniques to make sure my students are regulated during these moments of frustration. I provide structure and guidance for my students, but give them opportunities for free exploration, decision making, and leadership throughout a lesson.
